The Emporia State women’s basketball team scored the first six points of the game and never trailed on the way to a 91-55 victory over Saint Mary on Sunday at White Auditorium in Emporia. The Lady Hornets started the game on a 14-4 run and led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to as high as 17 in the second before settling for a 39-23 lead at the break. E-State pushed their lead as high as 36 in the second half. Head coach MJ Baker was happy with her team’s defense in the game.
The Spires came into the game hitting 10 three’s per contest but were held to 1-for-15 outside the arc by the Lady Hornets. Macy Gandee scored a career high 18 points with nine rebounds for the Hornets. She said the team needs to be ready for a road conference test Thursday.
Gracie Gilpin added 14 points for ESU and hit four threes to move into eighth on her own all-time breaking a tie with Andrea Leiker. ESU (4-2) moves to 3-0 at home and has won three in a row. The Lady Hornets open MIAA play on Thursday at Northwest Missouri. The doubleheader tips off at 5:30 p.m. with pregame coverage at 5:00 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
