The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a scam effort for the second time this week
The Sheriff’s Office says residents may get an email from an unspecified Google account asking for changes to direct deposit information. The Sheriff’s Office says direct deposit typically needs to be changed in person and needs a signature to make changes valid. Residents are told never to give out personal or banking information via email or by the phone, especially when they don’t know the contacts.
This follows a variant of a bail bond scam, where a scammer represents himself as part of Coffey County law enforcement or the court system as an alternative to bail bonds — but people need to pay up to $1,200 to get people out of jail.
