A Eureka family is looking for a new place to live after fire heavily damaged their home Friday.
Eureka Fire Chief Luke Westerman tells KVOE News crews were dispatched to 521 East River after at least one report of smoke coming from the home. Westerman says crews on site determined the fire was in the attic towards the back of the home, so they had to pull the ceiling underneath the fire and then attack the blaze.
The fire damage was contained to the attic area above the kitchen, but there was smoke damage through much of the house. Early indications are there was an electrical issue, although the exact cause is undetermined.
The Eureka Herald had announced a drive to accept clothing and funds shortly after the fire. It says the affected family has received more donations than they have room to store. Financial contributions are still being accepted at The Eureka Herald or Eureka’s Community National Bank & Trust, with checks made payable to James Pedigo.
This is the second damaging fire in Eureka in two weeks. S&L Hardware at 1518 East River continues resetting its operations after fire destroyed most of the building’s contents and merchandise Nov. 22. An undetermined electrical issue appears to be the cause with that fire as well. Numerous fundraisers have already been held to help the owners, Lisa and Shane Schweda, rebuild and restart. More fundraisers are scheduled or coming soon.
