‘Tis the season. . . . For illness.
As we get deeper into the holiday and new year season, we are also quickly approaching the peak flu season, according to an illness trend update by Lyon County Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga on KVOE’s Morning Show Monday.
In terms of current trends, Dr. Oyenuga says seasonal illnesses in younger residents are holding to traditional patterns.
As for more serious illnesses, Dr. Oyenuga says numbers for flu and COVID-19 are at even levels, but a spike may not be far off. When it comes to contributing factors, Dr. Oyenuga says the recent fluctuation in temperatures and conditions does not and typically do not play a direct role in virus replication.
When it comes to prevention, good hand hygiene, sneezing etiquette and proper hydration are the best courses of action. Should you start to feel ill or if you are recovering from an illness, Dr. Oyenuga says it may be best to avoid gatherings, including holiday parties, for the safety of everyone.
Vaccinations are also still highly recommended, even with flu season upon us, with flu and COVID-19 vaccines readily available across the community.
