Night one of the Paul Terry Classic tipped off with Emporia splitting with Spring Hill.
The Emporia girls dropped their first game of the season Tuesday night in Emporia to Spring Hill 59-48.
The Lady Spartans led 8-5 in the first until a 12-0 run by the Broncos gave them the advantage. Spring Hill never gave it back as they led 21-11 at the end of the first. Neither team could get a shot to fall in the second until the four minute mark. SH grew the lead to 12 at the break, 30-18. Emporia cut it to six to start the fourth, 41-35. EHS never got closer than that.
Head coach Bill Nienstedt was proud of the growth from this game last year.
Kinsley Hines made five threes and had a team high 15 points. Maycee Davis and Kaylee DeWitt each had 14.
The Lady Spartans fall to 2-1 and return to action Friday against Basehor-Linwood.
Emporia boys knocked off Spring Hill 49-44 in Emporia Tuesday.
Spring Hill used a 16-3 run to take a 19-7 lead in the first. Emporia won the second 25-4 and took a 32-23 advantage into the half. SH scored the opening nine points of the third to tie the game at 32, but the Spartans closed the quarter up 39-36.
Harry Trelc led the club with 15 and his plan was to be more aggressive.
Terrick Franklin chipped in ten.
Head coach Evan Burns blames the slow start on the team having no energy.
The Spartans improve to 3-0. They host Basehor-Linwood Friday night. KVOE will have the girls/boy doubleheader at 5:45 pm.
