The Emporia State University Hornets had an extra energetic cheering section Monday, thanks to a now annual cooperative event between ESU and USD 253 Emporia Public Schools.
In attendance for the Hornets’ afternoon game against Kansas Christian College were right around 300 sixth-grade students from Emporia Middle School for the second annual Kids Day. ESU Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Zach Fief says the event is the product of a lot of communication between the university and EMS.
He tells KVOE News they are very proud to be able to welcome the students, saying it is likely that this may be the first time that some are attending an ESU game, but he certainly hopes it won’t be the last.
EMS sixth-grade Assistant Principal Allyson Waddle says they are very thankful to ESU for working with the district on the event, saying it’s a great chance to inspire and energize their students.
In addition to the game itself, students were able to participate in several games and had a special visit from Buddy the Elf, who delivered candy, T-shirts and other ESU swag throughout the contest. The Hornets defeated Kansas Christian 113 to 60 Monday. We have more details on the game itself here.
We have a YouTube Short from the game available here.
