Emporia boys shocked 4th ranked Great Bend 61-51 in Emporia Tuesday night.
The Spartans scored the first nine points of the game as they held a 16-11 lead after eight minutes. The Panthers took a 20-19 advantage late in the second, but it was the Spartans that closed the quarter up 23-22. An 18-14 quarter extended the black and red advantage into the fourth 41-34.
Head coach Evan Burns had to create a new gameplan just before tip after learning Great Bend’s Ian Premer wasn’t gonna play.
After slow starts the last few games, he was happy for the early run.
Harry Trelc had a team high 17 points with 11 of those after intermission.
Terrick Franklin added 16 while Rylan Crowell chipped in 12.
The Spartans improve to 6-0 and host Liberal on Friday.
Emporia girls ended a three game losing streaking with a 49-37 victory over Great Bend Tuesday in Emporia.
EHS used an 11-0 run as the game was tied at five to take the early advantage and closed out the first up 16-7. Jayde Aguirre scored 13 first half points as the Lady Spartans led 29-23. Great Bend cut the deficit to 38-34 at the end of the third.
Aguirre paced all scorers with 15. Maycee Davis and Kaylee DeWitt each had 11. Kinsley Hines added nine and thought the whole team played great.
The Lady Spartans improve to 3-3 and host Liberal on Friday.
