The Emporia State basketball teams each won in their final games at home in 2025 on Wednesday at White Auditorium in Emporia.
The ESU women held off Bellevue late for a 73-65 victory. ESU missed its first eight shots of the game but fought back to a tie at the end of the first quarter. ESU took control of the game scoring 13 of the last 15 points of the first half over a six-minute stretch. Micah Hannah scored eight quick points to start the second half and extend the run to 22-4 over a nine-and-a-half minute span. BU fought back late but never got closer than six. Freshman Vanessa Coleman led the way with a career-high 16 points for the Hornets. Coach MJ Baker said she had told her freshman to step up.
Coleman said hearing that gave her confidence.
Three other Lady Hornets scored in double figures. ESU turned it over just four times. ESU (7-3) wraps up the first semester at Angelo State on Saturday.
The Emporia State men dominated in a 101-59 blowout of Sterling. ESU broke a 9-all tie with a 7-0 run early and didn’t trail again. ESU used a 29-7 run over an eight minute period to go up by 23. The run included a stretch of 17-straight Hornet points. ESU led by 24 at the break and used a 16-3 run to take the lead to 35 in the second half. Head coach Tom Billeter said the team’s offense is improving.
Freshman Treyvon Taylor scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Hornets. He said the team has been practicing well this week.
