The only thing holiday-ish about the weather forecast is the “foggy Christmas Eve” that’s in the works tonight.
In a forecast right for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, dense fog could make a return Christmas Eve night and stick around through mid-morning Christmas. National Weather Service meteorologist Kris Craven says the overall weather pattern has seen some storm systems move in, but they haven’t had much effect on temperatures or moisture and they haven’t stayed around very long.
Craven says the short-term pattern has been conducive to fog here, heavy rain into California and heavy snow in the upper Midwest.
Dense fog advisories have been re-issued for most area counties until noon Thursday. Greenwood County is currently the only area county not in any fog alert.
It now appears the record high of 72 degrees set in 2021 will now hold as high temperatures are now set to be in the upper 60s on Christmas. The Christmas Eve forecast will set a record as high temperatures are set to reach the mid-60s, above the current record of 59 set in 2021. Some short-term changes for the colder are coming as we get through the weekend.
Longer-term, as in into early spring, Craven says there are equal chances of wet, dry, warm and cold weather.
Whenever you encounter fog, slow down, use low-beam headlights and increase the distance between your vehicle and the others around you.
