Area law enforcement will be extra vigilant on the roadways now through the remainder of the calendar year.
Several agencies have announced their participation in the statewide Taking Down DUI traffic enforcement campaign, which will bring an increased law enforcement presence to the area now through January 2nd. This includes the Lyon, Greenwood and Morris County Sheriff’s offices, which announced their participation in recent days.
Officers will be on the lookout for drivers who appear to be under the influence of both alcohol and other substances, including drugs. According to statistics from the National Highway Safety Administration, on average, roughly 34 people die in drunk driving incidents across the nation daily.
Officers say these incidents are 100 percent preventable if motorists simply take responsible actions before heading out onto the roads. This includes having a safe plan of transportation to and from events where alcohol or drugs may be consumed or used, including having a designated driver or calling a ride share of some kind.
If you notice someone who has been partaking in substances that could lead to impairment on the roadways, do not let them get behind the wheel. Either take their keys, arrange a ride, or provide sleeping accommodations for them.
Also, if you see what you believe to be an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement immediately.
For those who are caught driving under the influence, the consequences can be severe, including financial impacts, loss of driving privileges or even jail time.
