From the law enforcement perspective, there wasn’t a lot of activity to start New Year’s Day.
Lyon County Emergency Communications reports five fireworks complaints, all of which came shortly after midnight.
There were less than five DUI-related incidents combined between Emporia Police and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. Three people were booked into the Lyon County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, while one person was arrested on suspicion of being a minor consuming, buying or possessing alcohol.
Local law enforcement continues its traffic enforcement special effort as part of the statewide Taking Down DUI campaign through Friday.
From the fire side, there was a bit of activity. Emporia Fire Capt. Greg Davis says there was one fireworks-related incident. Crews were called to Eighth and Exchange around 8:40 pm after a police officer found a fireworks box on fire in a street gutter. The fire was handled quickly with no additional damage reported.
Around midnight, Davis says a ditch fire was reported in the 1100 block of East. Also handled quickly, the cause for that incident is currently undetermined.
