It didn’t take long for the first local candidate to file for the 2026 election cycle.
According to Lyon County Clerk Amie Jones, current Lyon County District 1 Commissioner and Commission Chairman Ken Duft has filed for re-election. Duft was voted to serve on the commission back in 2022, replacing longtime commissioner Scott Briggs, who retired after 16 years and four terms in office.
Duft says he has been pondering the decision to run for another term for the past several months, adding that there are some key areas where he feels more improvement is still needed, including continued efforts to lower the county mill levy.
Another area is property taxes, a topic that county residents expressed a great deal of dissatisfaction with during the 2026 budgeting cycle. When it comes to trying to provide property tax relief locally, Duft would like to see larger allocations from the state level, specifically allocations from the state alcohol and tobacco tax fund.
As mentioned, Duft is the first local candidate to file for the 2026 election cycle, the ballot for which includes races for Governor and House seats at the state and federal levels.
