Emporia basketball swept Newton Tuesday in Emporia.
In the girl’s game Emporia ended a two game losing streak with a 48-32 victory over Newton.
The Lady Spartans forced eight first quarter turnovers as the took an early 11-7 lead after eight minutes. EHS grew the advantage to double figures in the second and went to the break up 25-15. Emporia led by 13 in the third, but ultimately brought a 36-25 lead to the fourth.
Kaylee Dewitt had a game high 19 and Jayde Aguirre added 13. Assistant coach Brett Stewart was really pleased with the forced turnovers early.
The Lady Spartans move to 5-6.
In the boy’s game, Emporia cruised to a 84-39 win over Newton.
Rylan Crowell scored nine first quarter points to lead the offense to a 21-15 advantage. EHS continued the offensive dominance with 32 second quarter points as they led 53-26 at half. The black and red won the third 25-8 as the lead ballooned to 78-34.
Harry Trelc had a career day scoring 31 points.
Crowell added 18. Head coach Evan Burns was impressed with the offense.
The Spartans improve to 10-1.
EHS returns to Centennial League play hosting Washburn Rural for a girl/boy doubleheader Friday.
