Emporia basketball split with Centennial League foe Washburn Rural Friday in Emporia.
In the girl’s game, Emporia fell to the Junior Blues 45-34. Neither team could buy a basket for the first two and a half minutes as Washburn Rural took the 11-10 lead into the second. The Junior Blues outshot EHS 9-1 in free throw attempts as they grew their advantage to 24-20 at half. Both teams struggled offensively in the third, but WR extended the lead to six, 30-24.
The largest lead of the game was 11 for the Junior Blues. EHS was just 2-11 from the charity stripe while WR made 15 of 23.
Kinsley Hines made three 3’s for a team-high nine points. Assistant coach Brett Stewart thought the offensive spacing was better than it’s been for most of the year.
Maycee Davis and Kaylee DeWitt each added seven.
EHS drops to 5-7 (0-2).
The Lady Spartans are off until Thursday, January 29 when the Glacier’s Edge Tournament starts.
In the boy’s game, Emporia earned their second league win with a 52-46 victory over Washburn Rural.
EHS pulled out to a slim 13-12 lead after one. The Spartans led by as many as nine in the second as they took a 30-23 advantage to half. The Junior Blues won the third 11-7 to cut the game to 37-34.
Terrick Franklin had a game-high 17 points while Harry Trelc chipped in 15. Trelc was proud for getting revenge from last year’s match-up.
Evan Burns’ club battled foul trouble all night forcing him to play a different final lineup than usual.
EHS improves to 11-1 (2-0).
The Spartans return to action at the El Dorado Tournament that starts on Thursday.
