Hazard mitigation is a topic for the Emporia City Commission as part of its meetings Wednesday.
During the action meeting, Deputy City Manager Mark Detter and Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell will lead the presentation, including information about the Kansas Region 1 local plan as reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Kansas Department of Emergency Management in coordination with Lyon County Emergency Management. Commissioners could vote on accepting the plan, which is an important step towards possibly gaining federal grant money, possibly several million dollars worth, for local projects.
Another topic of conversation in the action session involves the city’s trash and recycling contract with Hamm’s Quarries, which recently announced its merger with Allied Waste Systems, a subsidiary of Republic Services, and possible approval of Hamm’s request to have Allied Waste handle the city’s contract for solid waste and recycling hauling services set to expire at the end of this year. The city is planning to bid the contract later this year, and there could be discussion about a possible solid waste master plan.
An executive session on economic development matters is planned before commissioners go into the study session, with discussions about a lift station, the 2026 Street Rehab project, proposed changes to mobile food vendor and unit regulations and funding for Visit Emporia.
The action meeting will be at 11 am Wednesday at the Municipal Court Room. The study meeting follows at the White Auditorium Wheeler Conference Center, formerly known as City Conference Room 1 AB.
