Emporia girls basketball fell to Washburn Rural 45-31 in the semifinal of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament in Emporia on Friday.
The Junior Blues opened with the first 16 points of the game as they never trailed. EHS trailed 16-2 after one. Rural grew the lead to 17 at half 28-11. The Lady Spartan defense surrendered just six points in the third as they cut the deficit to 34-21.
Bill Nienstedt’s club couldn’t rebound from the slow start.
He credits the “special teams” for the third quarter defense.
Kaylee DeWitt led Emporia with 11 points
The loss drops the Lady Spartans to 6-8. They return to action Saturday playing for third place against Wichita South. Tipoff set for 1:30 p.m. with pregame coverage on KVOE at 1:15 p.m.
