The Emporia State baseball team used another big inning to beat East Central 18-12 in their first game at the Edmond First Pitch Tournament. The Hornets trailed 5-2 after two but tied the game on a three-run Nathon Cruz homer in the third. Frankie Santiago left the yard in the fourth on a solo shot and ESU extended the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. ECU came back with five in the fifth to take the lead, but ESU responded with three runs in the sixth to snatch the lead back on a Tiger wild pitch and a double by Sammy Padilla. ESU put the game away by hammering the Tigers for a seven-run seventh that included two bases loaded walks, a steal of home by Gus Keller, and a grand slam by Evan Abbott. It was the sixth inning of the year where the Hornets scored at least five runs. Jake Khasaempanth (1-0) picked up the win pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. ESU (5-0) plays their second game of the tournament Friday at 4:00 p.m. against Missouri-St. Louis.
