An Emporia woman was arrested after an incident that started with a chase and ended with a crash in west Emporia on Friday.
The Emporia Police Department says an officer began a traffic stop of a car near 12th and Rural just after 4 pm. Instead of stopping, the driver, later identified as 40-year-old Mariel Martin, fled north to 15th and Rural, failed to yield to the stop sign and turned west on 15th. Martin also did not stop at the next stop sign, 15th and Prairie, and crashed into a minivan that was southbound on Prairie. Martin’s car went across the intersection and stopped in a yard at 15th and Thompson.
Martin had no apparent injuries but was arrested on multiple outstanding warrants and could face charges connected to the pursuit and crash.
The minivan driver was identified as 37-year-old Jason Carey of Emporia. Carey suffered minor injuries and declined an ambulance trip to a hospital. Two juveniles inside the minivan were not hurt.
5 pm Friday: EPD confirms at least one arrest following reported vehicle pursuit and two-vehicle collision in Emporia Friday
Emporia Police are reporting that at least one person was arrested following an alleged vehicle pursuit and two vehicle accident near Village Elementary School late Friday afternoon.
The accident was reported around 4 pm at the intersection of 15th Avenue and Prairie Street, prompting a response from Emporia Police, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and Emporia Fire and EMS to the intersection. According to EPD Captain Lisa Hayes, a vehicle pursuit did occur before the accident; however, the origination point of said pursuit has not been detailed.
Hayes says two vehicles were involved in the accident: a westbound passenger car, make and model not listed, traveling at a reportedly high rate of speed on 15th Avenue and a northbound passenger van traveling along Prairie. Initial indications are that the passenger car struck the van in the intersection; however, a full crash narrative is still pending.
Hayes could not confirm the extent of any injuries sustained in the crash nor the number of individuals inside each vehicle. EPD is leading the investigation into the accident, with additional information, including names of those involved and the individual or individuals arrested, pending.
