Grass fire season is unofficially underway across Kansas, and the state is marking Wildfire Awareness Week this week.
The Kansas Forest Service says more than 90 percent of wildfires across the state are caused by humans, whether through debris burns, sparking trailer chains, welding, various equipment use or other outdoor fires in high-danger conditions.
In much the same way as the National Weather Service handles Severe Weather Awareness Week, this public information campaign has different focal points every day:
*Monday — Homeowners: Preparedness Starts at Home
*Tuesday — Neighbors Helping Neighbors
*Wednesday — Firefighters and Emergency Responders: Community Protection in Action
*Thursday — Partnerships: Working Before the Emergency
*Friday — Making Kansas Stronger
Numerous entities are part of this information campaign, including the Kansas Forest Service, Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal, Kansas State Firefighters Association, Kansas Association of Fire Chiefs, National Weather Service and US Forest Service.
