Olpe eighth-grader Kaley Wade won the event by correctly spelling “cavalry,” outlasting 29 other students at the Humanitarian Center.
After her victory, Wade spoke with KVOE News and said she didn’t expect to win; she was trying to make it further than she had in previous years.
When asked her routine for preparing for the bee, Wade stated:
Wade says she also had several people step up to help her prepare.
Rounding out the top four contestants:
*Second: Sage Dye, North Lyon County Junior High
*Third: Samuel Westhoff, Hartford Middle School
*Fourth: Della Beemer, Emporia Christian School
Wade now advances to the state spelling bee March 21 at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be May 26-28 in Washington, DC.
