Emporia basketball dropped both Centennial League games in Topeka on Friday with Topeka High with the Trojans claiming the Dean Smith Trophy back.
In the girls’ game, Topeka pulled away in the third for a 58-40 win.
Topeka opened with four straight which was immediately answered by six in a row from Emporia. Each club traded baskets the rest of the first to make it 11-11. The Trojans used a 10-0 run in the second to take a 21-15 lead and held the advantage at the break, 27-21. THS threw a haymaker in the third quarter, outscoring Emporia 22-9.
Maycee Davis had a game high 24 points while Kaylee DeWitt added ten.
Assistant coach Brett Stewart said Davis and the whole team have been working on their games.
The Lady Spartans fall to 7-14 (1-7).
In the boys’ game, 16 made threes was too much for Emporia to overcome in the 73-69 loss.
Topeka connected on six first-quarter threes and pulled ahead 20-10 after one. The triples continued to fall in the second for the Trojans, who built a 16-point lead 31-15. EHS cut the deficit to 39-28 at halftime. Topeka grew their advantage to 60-46 heading to the fourth.
Harry Trelc led four Spartans in double figures with 22. Rylan Crowell added 13 and EHS got 12 from Terrick Franklin.
Head coach Evan Burns and the boys ran into a hot shooting team.
For the first time, EHS drops three straight. Emporia moves to 15-6 (4-4).
Senior Night is Tuesday with Manhattan in attendance.
