The Emporia State basketball teams
In the women’s game, Gracie Gilpin powered the Lady Hornets with a game-high 22 points to a 71-59 victory over the Jets. ESU scored the first eight points of the game and NU never led. A late first-half run put ESU up by six at the break and ESU broke the game open in the third with a 14-3 run to take a 43-30 lead early in the third. Gilpin became the 33rd Lady Hornet to score at least 1,000 points in her ESU career. Gilpin said it was a special accomplishment.
Head coach MJ Baker said Gilpin deserves all of the accolades.
ESU (14-12, 8-9 MIAA) outrebounded the Jets by 20. Kaitlyn Sanders added 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists with no turnovers. The Lady Hornets can clinch an MIAA Tournament berth with a win in either of their games next week.
In the men’s game, the Hornets used a 15-3 run at the end of the first half to build a 22-point lead at the break on the way to a 92-63 victory over the Jets. The Hornets finished the game with 24 assists against just 10 turnovers and outscored NU 27-12 in points off turnovers. Head coach Tom Billeter said the team moved the ball well against the NU zone defense.
Andrew Pengel led the way with 20 points hitting 4 of 8 3-pointers. He said ESU executed its offensive game plan.
ESU (9-17, 5-12 MIAA) got 14 points from Dallas Bear while Trey Redd scored six points with four rebounds and eight assists against no turnovers. The win keeps ESU’s postseason hopes alive as they travel to Missouri Western on Wednesday. Coverage begins at 5:00 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
