Plenty of community, combined with an abundance of soul, made for a great turnout at the second annual Taste of Soul Food fundraising meal for the Emporia Eastside Community Group on Sunday.
The group hosted the meal, which included soul-food staples such as barbecue neck bones, chicken, collard greens, mac & chees and much more, at the Emporia Senior Center, a new and larger venue from the inaugural event held at the Emporia Recreation Center last year. When asked what the move to a larger space meant for the fundraiser, organizer Arthur Lorick had a simple answer: “It means it’s good,” referring to the food and hospitality.
What makes the food so good? Well, in Lorrick’s opinion, it’s the fact that the majority is homemade from the heart.
Lorrick says more than just raising funds to support activities through the group, the meal also provided an opportunity to bring all segments of the community together for a time of fellowship and engagement, something he says is desperately needed in this time, and something he says food does better than anything else.
Fundraising totals from the meal are currently pending.
