The Emporia State baseball team swept Arkansas-Fort Smith to open up MIAA play last weekend. They were rewarded by The MIAA by sweeping both weekly awards on Monday. Colby Deaver was named the MIAA Pitcher of the week for the third time this season while Noah Steele was named the Hitter of the Week. Deaver has now run his streak to 23 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run to begin the season. He’s tallied 35 strikeouts and issued just two walks. He had nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings in his win over the Lions. Steele went 6-for-10 in the series with a pair of home runs including a grand slam. He drove in 10 runs and had six walks while scoring nine runs. ESU (12-1, 3-0 MIAA) hosts Opening Day at the Trusler Sports Complex Friday to begin a three-game series with Northwest Missouri. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
