With the overarching picture decided, Americus City Council members are meeting Tuesday in part to discuss details of closing the city’s police department.
City Council members voted last month to close the department after several years’ worth of concerns about law enforcement coverage, primarily with staffing. The department is down to one officer and City Council member Bill Harmon says Americus recently had a month that saw less than 8 total hours of police coverage.
Once the city resolves related items like an equipment sale, records disposal, evidence transfer and other matters, Americus has planned to have the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office handle regular patrol in much the same way deputies handle patrol in other Lyon County towns.
Tuesday’s meeting starts at 7 pm at Americus City Hall.
