How best to proceed with girls sports in Hartford was a main discussion point for USD 252 Southern Lyon County board members Monday night.
The discussion is in its early stages after the girls basketball team had to forfeit several games before canceling the last few contests of the season due to a combination of low initial numbers, as well as illness and injury as the season progressed. Superintendent Ryan Muhlig says the goal of conversations like Monday night’s is to get ahead of the situation early.
Muhlig says the participation concerns revolve around basketball, which was down to 5 players when the last few games were canceled, and volleyball as opposed to track and field.
Speaking of a cooperative agreement, Muhlig says there are several things to consider beyond the partner, whether it’s Olpe, Madison — which already has cooperative partnerships with Hamilton in certain areas — or another school. On the list: basketball doubleheaders involving the Hartford boys program.
Muhlig says the district needs to get the student perspective as the district-level discussion continues.
Separately, the board considered an interlocal agreement involving USD 252, the city of Olpe and the city’s parks department as connected to the ongoing Olpe Fitness Park project, but decided to table any action so to get more information.
