For the most part, area counties escaped Thursday’s significant fire danger.
Morris County reported a grass fire near South 400 and Road F, as well as a structure fire in Wilsey. Details are pending for both incidents. The Wilsey fire is now being investigated by the Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal.
Wabaunsee County had a farm equipment fire outside Alma. A farm implement caught fire and burned an unspecified amount of corn nearby.
No injuries were reported with any of these incidents.
The area fire danger was lifted to very high to critical levels because of mild temperatures, low relative humidity levels and wind speeds above 40 mph from early afternoon Thursday into early Friday morning.
Relative humidity levels will be below 25 percent Friday, but wind speeds will be substantially lower, going to light and variable by afternoon. Saturday will be dry and mild with temperatures in the mid-70s, but winter makes a sharp return Sunday. A powerful storm system will bring rain in the morning, but that will change to snow as temperatures drop from the 50s to around 15 overnight early Sunday. An inch of snow or less is likely, alongside wind gusts increasing to 40-50 mph by late afternoon — meaning a potential for reduced visibility for late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.
