This upcoming weekend is shaping up to be a tale of two seasons.
Spring, largely evident for several weeks even though the season hasn’t officially started, continues Saturday with highs in the mid-70s. Wind speeds won’t be excessive, maxing out around 20 mph, but a very high fire danger is setting up just northwest of Emporia because of humidity levels below 30 percent.
Sunday starts with spring-like temperatures in the mid-50s. By mid-morning, temperatures begin falling to the upper 30s by later afternoon and the upper teens overnight. As the temperatures fall, winds shift from southwest to northwest and increase to as high as 60 mph –prompting the National Weather Service to announce a high wind watch for Lyon and all surrounding counties from 7 am to 10 pm. Rain showers for the morning and early afternoon will change to snow showers before sunset, and although the area can only expect up to 1 inch of snow, the combination of snow and wind will lead to drifting and poor visibility — while cooling temperatures may cause isolated icing. Air temperatures will go below freezing shortly after sunset. Wind chills will be in the lower single digits by sunrise Monday.
The good news is winter loses its grip on the area quickly. After high temperatures in the mid-30s Monday, highs will increase daily all week, with a high in the low 80s expected Friday.
KVOE and KVOE.com will have updates.
