Like it or not, the winter illness season continues.
Battling a recent illness herself, Lyon County Health Officer Dr Ladun Oyenuga joined KVOE’s Morning Show for an update Friday. She says it appears flu cases are increasing after trending downward last month.
Kansas is listed as having high flu activity as of March 7 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although the overall level of respiratory illnesses is listed as low. Dr Oyenuga says the official numbers don’t capture the full picture because of the prevalence of home tests — or people toughing it out.
When it comes to COVID-19, Dr Oyenuga says it’s still there but not as impactful as it was when it first arrived six years ago.
As has been the case for much of the season, a lot of flu cases have had a high, prolonged fever as one of the signature symptoms, along with chills, lethargy and cough.
Winter illness season typically goes at least into March and can stretch into April. Dr Oyenuga says it’s too soon to say how soon the winter illness season will last.
