Kansas is gearing up for a swing from spring to winter to summer.
The change from spring to winter has already happened. Last week had a lot of springlike conditions, including a brief risk of severe weather. Sunday obviously brought snow flurries and a hard freeze, including a low temperature of 11 degrees — breaking the prior low of 16 dating back 70 years.
Summer? That comes this weekend with the potential for record high temperatures. The current forecast calls for 86 degrees Friday and 89 degrees Saturday. The current record for March 19 is 90 degrees, so a record Friday is unlikely — but the March 20 record is 86 degrees dating back to 2017.
The reason for the warm-up is a ridge of high pressure that will bake the western half of the country. Widespread 90s will be likely to close the week. Some areas in central and southern Arizona will likely go above 100.
The National Weather Service says the ridge will flatten this upcoming weekend, meaning our heat will be short-lived. In fact, temperatures will be in the 70s Sunday and low 60s Monday.
