The Lady Hornet softball team split their non-conference road trip at Drury on Wednesday. Emporia State opened the day with a 5-4 loss to the Panthers in Springfield, Mo. The Lady Hornets opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second by Addison Callaway but the Panthers scored 5-straight over the next two innings including a 4-run third inning. A Brynley Smith solo shot and Ally Miller single got two back in the fourth, but the Lady Hornets only scored one more run the rest of the game. Izzy Sloan (1-1) pitched all 6.0 innings but gave up nine hits and five ER to take the loss.
E-State exploded for four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth and never looked back on the way to a 10-3 beatdown in game two to earn a split. ESU started the scoring with a walk before Sydney Wagner delivered a two-run double and Taryn Burkhardt singled in another run. Then a pair of doubles by Avery Brewer and Wagner helped power the five-run fifth inning. Drury scored the next three but Smith doubled in another run in the sixth for insurance. Morgan Tomlinson (4-1) went 5.0 innings giving up four hits and two earned runs to earn the win. The Black & Gold are back in MIAA action Saturday with a road trip to Wichita to face the Newman Jets.
