Almost three months after fire destroyed a mobile home and killed one person in east Emporia, the investigation is largely — but not totally — complete.
Emporia Fire says the Dec 23 fire at 801 Clark will have an undetermined cause after lengthy investigative work involving the department, Emporia Police and the Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal. Undetermined means there are several potential causes and evidence does not either confirm or rule out causes. having said that, Emporia Fire says the most likely scenario was discarded smoking materials and an accidental fire.
The victim’s identity has not been released, and Emporia Fire says that’s because positive identification is still awaiting confirmation from the Lyon County Coroner’s Office.
