If you haven’t done your personal taxes and are looking for help with simple returns, Emporia State University is ready to help with its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
VITA is supported by the Internal Revenue Service. It’s free to use and can help people in several categories, according to ESU visiting instructor of tax and accounting Payson Maydew.
Maydew says supervised students will both prepare and file federal tax returns and state returns after he reviews the numbers.
Maydew says there have been several significant changes in tax code versus last year, including but not limited to a $6,000 bonus deduction for people age 65 and over, increases in state and local tax deductions and new deductions for vehicle interest.
Maydew encourages residents using the VITA program to bring several documents so the process can go smoothly.
Currently, there are three available dates: Monday, Thursday and March 30. Services are available from 5-7 pm on these dates. Services are at Cremer Hall Room 205, or the Roe Cross Conference Room.
Tax Day is April 15.
