The Emporia Recreation Commission has a busy start of the week ahead.
The Rec Commission Steering Committee will meet at 3:30 pm Monday to continue conversations about a new public recreation center and potential renovations to the longtime public facility at Lee Beran Recreation Center. Discussions about a new public recreation center have picked up steam so far this year after they were moving towards a funding vote and a location at Champions Landing before Tyson Foods announced its complete local closure in late 2024, cutting over 700 jobs. The effort towards a public recreation facility was halted all last year and has shifted to a combination of new facility and renovations to Lee Beran.
The Rec Commission Board will have its monthly meeting at 5:30 pm Tuesday. On the agenda are separate contract discussions, one for Internet service and another for an elevator. Other business includes ongoing conversations about artificial intelligence policy and solar benches, as well as updates on the State Basketball Tournament and the Emporia Team Pass program developed through city transient guest tax funding as reimbursements to participating teams for hotels, food and entertainment expenses. There will also be an official update from the Steering Committee on its progress and direction.
Both meetings will be at Lee Beran.
