Several key details are yet to be developed, but the plan for a new public recreation center and a renovated Lee Beran Rec Center is taking shape.
Steering Committee members on Monday discussed a $22 million total bond package funded by a 0.25-percent sales tax. Over $15 million would go towards a new center, while the rest would be earmarked for Lee Beran. Much of the conversations Monday updated committee members on potential amenities and features for both a new rec center and a renovated Lee Beran.
There are still discussions about whether Champions Landing, the desired site during the first conversations two years ago, or the west side of the Jones Aquatic Center property will be the site. Committee Chair Deon Morrow, Wednesday’s guest on the KVOE Newsmaker segment at 7:20 am, says Champions Landing returned to the table as cost discussions continue.
This also unofficially starts the clock on a bond election, likely this November with a backup in March 2027.
The next Steering Committee meeting April 28 will be a significant one for the project going forward because tentative costs should be finalized and architect renderings should be in hand.
The Steering Committee discussion led to a presentation to the Emporia Recreation Commission Board. Rec Commission Director Amanda Gutierrez says the overall plan meets needs the community had indicated during the 2024 process, including three gymnasiums, a wider walking track, indoor aquatics with two bodies of water, indoor play space, a larger fitness area and indoor turf for a price tag less than half of the $45 million original package.
Separately, the board tabled a contract decision for internet service, but members approved a new policy for the use of artificial intelligence.
