Traditions, young and old, only exist and thrive if they have the support to do so. Safe to say, support for the Kiwanis Club of Emporia’s annual Pancake Day fundraiser is as strong as ever as the club held the 78th rendition of the event Saturday morning.
Hundreds of hungry residents passed through the doors of the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building to enjoy the menu of freshly made pancakes and sausage, all in support of the club’s mission in the community, as well as the many causes it supports year-round. Among those causes, and front and center Saturday, was the David Traylor Zoo, which was benefiting from the breakfast’s annual raffle.
Proceeds from the raffle will go to support scholarships for students to attend the zoo’s summer camp in July. According to Zoo Director Brenda Young, KVOE’s Talk of Emporia guest Friday, the cost for camp ranges between $80-$90 per year and focuses on educating elementary students on a range of topics all centered around their theme “endangered species.”
Kiwanis Club President Elect Debbie Williams says this was a natural fit for the club to support as the club, much like the zoo, is heavily focused on supporting young people.
As for proceeds from the breakfast itself, Williams stated the number of causes and organizations those dollars will go to support is vast.
Looking at the turnout for Saturday’s event and the longevity of the breakfast itself, Williams stated she is honored to be a part of such a tradition in the community.
Totals from Pancake Day will be announced at a later time.
