Warm, breezy and dry conditions continue Sunday, but there are no fire weather alerts for area counties Sunday.
The area’s three-day string of red flag warnings and resulting burn bans for affected counties ended Saturday evening. Sunday should see high temperatures near 80 degrees and Monday should have highs near 90, with peak wind gusts between 30-40 mph, but minimum relative humidity levels should be between 30-40 percent both afternoons.
Areawide, grass fire activity Saturday was minimal. Greenwood County, which has had some significant fire activity over the last week, had a small grass fire near 50th Street and J Road that was handled quickly.
Another concern — again — has been air quality. Fires south of Emporia all the way to near Tulsa, Oklahoma, created a lot of smoke that dropped air quality levels to unhealthy for all groups from around 6 pm Saturday to 2 am Sunday. Local air quality as of 6 am Sunday was listed as moderate by AirNow.
The fire danger will likely switch off by Tuesday as shower and thunderstorm chances return to the area, with rain chances persisting into the upcoming weekend. Currently, no severe weather is expected.
