The Emporia State baseball and tennis teams were both on the road this weekend.
The tennis teams swept their final meetings with the Newman Jets in Wichita on Saturday. The Hornets rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Jets. ESU swept the doubles point led by Anton Sarunic and Luke West winning 6-1 at #1 doubles. ESU won the first three matches of singles to clinch the dual and was leading 5-0 in the second set of a fourth match when the Jet player retired. ESU won a pair of three-set matches to complete the sweep. The Lady Hornets also swept NU 7-0. With the Jet program ending at the end of the season, the Navy & Red had just two doubles teams, but ESU took both matches 6-2 to take the doubles point. The Jets didn’t field anyone at #6 singles and E-State swept the other five matches to sweep the dual. Carla Paul Piquer highlighted the day dropping just one game at #3 singles. The Lady Hornets host Fort Hays State Thursday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex while the men and women host a duel doubleheader on Friday in Emporia.
After being no-hit in game one of their series at #15 Rogers State, the Hornet baseball team salvaged game three of the series on Sunday, but the Hornets suffered another shutout defeat falling 10-0 to the Hillcats on Saturday. E-State managed just two hits Saturday and committed three errors in the loss. Colby Deaver (7-2) was solid lasting 5.0 innings surrendering six runs but just three were earned. ESU was outhit again 13-10 on Sunday but the Hornets found a way to win 8-2 in game three of the series. A Hornet groundout and Hillcat error in the first gave ESU a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the ‘Cats tied it up through four. ESU added one in the fifth on a Logan Myers single before Dominic Felix doubled in another run in the eighth. E-State added insurance with a ninth-inning Noah Steele single before Tyler Coffin drilled a three-run homer to put the game out of reach. Nick Woodcock (3-1) and Grant Huffman combined to shutout RSU over the last 5.1 innings with Huffman picking up his sixth save. ESU (23-8, 10-7 MIAA) returns home to face Missouri Western in the second game of that midweek MIAA series on Tuesday at the Trusler Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
