The Emporia High boys tennis season got underway Tuesday with the Emporia Invitational.
The best finish in the singles tournament came from Brecken Hines in eighth. The opening match was a thrilling 8-7 win. In his second round match, he fell 8-0. The sophomore also went down in his final two matches, including in the seventh-place match 8-3.
In doubles, the top finish was the duo of Collin Moody and Nicholas Weller in thirteenth. They dropped their first match 8-2 and followed that with an 8-4 loss. Back-to-back wins secured them thirteenth including in their final 8-3.
Coach Saul Trujillo thought some of the team started nervous with it being the first tournament.
He wants to see his guys be more aggressive as the season moves on.
The Spartans travel to the Spring Hill Invite on Thursday.
