The Emporia State baseball team won their first midweek series against Missouri Western with an 8-3 win at the Trusler Sports Complex on Tuesday. The Hornets fell behind early but scored single runs in the second and third to take the lead including a solo homer by Frankie Santiago. Logan Myers had RBIs in the first and again in the fourth which answered a Griffon run in the top half of the inning to give ESU the lead back. Western tied the game again in the fifth but the Hornets took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth. Graeme Rios (3-0) tossed 3.0 innings of perfect relief to earn the win. He said the team was focused on taking the series despite not having played Western since March 18.
Head coach John Martin said the team was able to respond well to each Western score.
ESU (24-8, 11-7 MIAA) returns to action to host Newman for a three-game series beginning on Thursday. The Jets will bat second in each inning and be designated as the home team in the scorebook. The series was moved to Emporia due to poor field conditions in Wichita. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
