Day one was Thursday at the ESU Midwest Classic at Welch Stadium in Emporia. The javelin throwers were also in action. Brooks Lowe defended the home turf for the Hornets winning the event with a personal best toss of 229 ft.-2 in. Mitch Budke was fifth. Harper Schoendaller finished just off the podium for E-State in fourth place for the Lady Hornets. Lou Dumas is the leader after the first day of the women’s heptathlon. Dumas built the lead with a runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles while winning the shot put. Luke Hampl is in ninth in the men’s decathlon following the first day of events. The classic continues Friday with multis wrapping up beginning at 9:30 a.m. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m.
