The Emporia State baseball team scored the first 18 runs of the game on the way to a 19-4 run-rule in game one against Newman at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. ESU opened the game scoring six in the top of the first and never looked back. E-State is the visiting team on the scoreboard with the Jets batting second in each inning with the series being moved from Wichita. The Jets have cancelled the remainder of their home games at McCarthy Field due to poor playing conditions. The Hornet offense capitalized with nine runs in the fourth on just four hits as the Jets walked in a run, allowed another to score on a wild pitch, a passed ball, with two more runs scoring thanks to two NU balks. Seth Stover (5-1) was pulled with an 18-run lead after five and allowed just one hit in the win. Brady Unrein paced the offense going 6-for-6 with three RBIs. He said his approach at the plate was solid.
It is the first six-hit game by a Hornet this millennium. Head coach John Martin said the Hornets can’t have a let down in game two.
ESU (25-8, 12-7 MIAA) returns to Trusler for game two Friday at 3:00 p.m.
