The Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan is into its most significant period of the year.
Burn restrictions are now underway through April. The plan allows for controlled pasture burns, ceremonial fires and grilling. Lyon County Extension Ag Agent Brian Rees says fire is an important control mechanism for the Flint Hills — and becoming more so as the landscape changes.
Rees says grasses are finally greening up after a dry winter and early spring.
In Lyon County, controlled burn activity needs to be reported before fires are lit and after they are put out. Online forms are available at lyoncountyks.gov.
