Ten different Hornets hit safely as the Emporia State baseball team piled up a season-high in offense on the way to a sweep over Newman on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex. A day after hitting a season’s best seven home runs, the Black & Gold didn’t need any in game three of the series but did manage 16 hits in a 23-5 massacre of the Jets. ESU won each game of the set in a seven-inning run-rule and outscored the Navy & Red 58-10 in the series. The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead through one despite not earning a hit thanks to four walks and one hit batsmen. The Big Gold bats woke up in the second with seven runs on six hits to make it a 9-0 lead. NU was an active participant of their own demise committing three errors in the inning. The Jets committed six total errors with seven wild pitches and nine walks in the game. Quinton Chindamo pitched the first three innings for the Hornets. Rico Merlo (1-1) pitched a scoreless fourth to earn the victory. E-State (27-8,14-7 MIAA) goes for a win in their second midweek MIAA series Tuesday as they travel to Fort Hays State for game two. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
