An investigation continues into allegedly illegal gaming machines at an Emporia convenience store.
Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission Government Relations Manager Randy Evans tells KVOE News there is an ongoing criminal investigation, and although no arrests have been made and no criminal charges have been filed, Racing and Gaming plans to begin civil asset forfeiture work early next month.
Racing and Gaming worked alongside Emporia Police officers to serve a search warrant at Sunoco, 505 South Commercial, in mid-March. Evans says the warrant led to the seizure of five gaming machines, as well as paperwork and about $3,000. Evans says the devices look like slot machines and are touted as games of skill, but there is very little skill involved and the machines in question are more set up to be games of chance. The allegedly illegal machines also have much lower payback percentages than similar, legal machines in casinos.
