The Emporia State baseball team scored the last 13 runs of the game on the way to a 13-7 victory to salvage game three of their series with Missouri Southern on Sunday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. The Lions led 7-0 through four and a half innings before the Hornets exploded for eight runs highlighted by a leadoff home run by Cooper Schwindt who then homered again in his second at bat of the fifth. E-State added five more after that on a three-run moonshot by Noah Steele and a two-run homer from Logan Myers. Grayson Barnes (2-0) was assigned the win after getting one out. Nick Woodcock threw three innings of shutout ball in relief allowing just two hits while striking out six. Head coach John Martin said it was great to see the team bust out of its offensive slump.
Schwindt said down seven in the dugout in the fifth, the Hornets were focused on competing.
Myers finished 3-for-4 with three runs and drove in two. Schwindt was 2-for-4 with the two dingers and drove in three. Steele was 2-for-4 with four RBI’s. The Hornets return to the road for game three of their first MIAA midweek series against Missouri Western on Tuesday. The Hornets have won the series with victories in the first two games. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
