Emporia’s American Legion Post 5 ‘s work with last year’s Wreaths Across America campaign didn’t go unnoticed.
The national Wreaths Across America organization says the Emporia post helped to sponsor over 2,500 wreaths for veterans laid to rest at Maplewood Memorial Lawn this past December — second in Kansas last year, only behind a post out of Fort Scott. The post registered as a $5 Forward group, where $5 of every donation goes towards sponsoring another wreath as part of a national program.
Local Sponsorship Group leader and Post 5 member Clay Childs says the program let the post maximize the sponsorship impact and get a head start on this year’s effort with better than 1,200 wreaths already sponsored.
This year’s National Wreaths Across America Day is Dec. 19. To sponsor a wreath at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery this year, go online to wreathsacrossamerica.org/ks0170.
