Emporia residents will have a chance to celebrate the environment and enjoy a morning full of activities at the annual Earth Day Celebration hosted at the Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center on Saturday, April 25.
The free event will run from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to all ages. Organizers say the celebration is designed to bring the community together through hands-on activities, educational experiences and outdoor fun that highlight the importance of environmental stewardship.
Attendees can take part in a variety of activities throughout the morning, including a guided nature hike led by members of the Kansas Spanish Speakers group and a fishing experience hosted by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks staff, with equipment provided.
Families can also explore creative and educational booths. Emporia State University Art Outreach will offer crafts made from recycled materials, while the Emporia Public Library will host a bilingual StoryWalk. The Emporia Arts Council Art Mobile is also scheduled to appear with additional art activities.
In recognition of Arbor Day, participants will have the opportunity to learn about and help plant native American plum trees. ESU students and professors will also provide information on ocean conservation, and visitors can take part in a pond ecology exploration, examining microscopic aquatic life with experts.
The event will wrap up with a prize giveaway featuring items for both children and adults.
Organizers encourage community members to attend with family and friends. No registration is required.
