A new chapter begins for the Lady Spartans as Emporia High School has selected its next girls basketball head coach.
Geo Lyons was approved as the Lady Spartans’ new head coach during Wednesday night’s school board meeting, becoming the program’s fourth head coach in as many years.
Lyons brings prior head coaching experience after leading boys programs at Schlagle High School and Topeka High School. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for the boys team at Hayden High School.
He takes over an Emporia squad that went 8-16 last season under Bill Nienstedt, who returned to the sideline for one year. Despite the losing record, the Lady Spartans showed flashes of competitiveness throughout the season.
Lyons will also serve as a paraeducator at Emporia High, a role that could help him build stronger relationships with students and athletes off the court.
With multiple coaching changes in recent seasons, stability will be a key focus as Lyons steps into the program. His experience leading at the high school level and working with players in different roles could provide a foundation for growth as the Lady Spartans look ahead to the upcoming season.
