Emporia High soccer continued its strong season Thursday, rolling past Topeka West 5-0 at Spartan Field behind a balanced offensive attack and another dominant defensive effort.
The Lady Spartans wasted little time setting the tone. Rylie Mitchell opened the scoring with 23 minutes left in the first half, and Peyton Chanley followed just five minutes later to make it 2-0. Emersyn Johnson added a third goal with 10 minutes remaining before halftime, converting a penalty kick after a foul in the box.
Emporia stayed aggressive after the break. Mitchell found the net again with 25 minutes left in the match for her second goal of the night, and Viveca Fuller capped the scoring with 18 minutes to play.
While the offense delivered throughout, the Lady Spartans’ defense remained the backbone of the performance, recording its eighth clean sheet of the season. Head coach Oscar Macias said the consistency on that side of the ball has been no surprise.
With the win, the Black and Red improves to 7-3 on the season. The Lady Spartans will be back in action Monday on the road at Wichita Heights.
